NEW V3 – Free Virtual Host Guide & Tool

NEW V3 – Free Virtual Host Guide & Tool

By popular demand, we have updated our Virtual Host guide and tool for FileMaker Server 13+ on Mac. The new guide will work with FileMaker Server 13.0v5 and higher. There are several new tips and tricks included in the “goodies” section. The new tool is now completely unlocked and does not use plugin anymore. Also new in this version is support for SSL.

This is the original description:

With FileMaker Server 13 we got a lot of great new stuff. However, the installation of FMS13 will take over the Apache webserver on a Mac OSX server, which will prevent you from using the built-in web tools in Mac OSX ServerAdmin. Many people will have a need to be able to create virtual hosts for especially CWP solutions. Please be aware that FMI strongly advice you to only use a dedicated machine for FMS.

As FMS13 takes over the Apache settings, there is no native way to configure Virtual Hosts, using GUI tools on Mac OS X. Due to this change, I have created a guide, with an accompanion FileMaker solution, that gives you the ability to configure Virtual Hosts. It can be used for a lot of things and also give you the ability to e.g. create an alias, that takes the user directly to a WD solution, without showing the WD homepage.
e.g. www.mycompany.com/wd can take the user directly to the WebDirect solution. It is also possibly to specify the web folder path, so it can e.g. be stored on another hard drive.

Using this guide, you can make the setup within 10 min.

In this version, SSL sites is not supported. This is due to some heavy re-write rules in the configuration, which I have not been able to find an easy way around yet. Feedback is greatly apprechiated, both here and via email.

This guide is not official supported by FMI, so any use is on your own risk.

DataManix & SquareMoon naming conventions

DataManix & SquareMoon naming conventions

We have created a naming conventions document in collaboration with our great colleagues at SquareMoon Industries.
The way these conventions sets themselves apart from many others, is that they are meant to be limited to a few rules and mostly guidelines. This should make it more easy to follow and not lock the developer into a very specific way of developing.
We publish these conventions to the community in the hope that others would like to adopt them. The more, who adopt, the easier it will be for new developers to get into FileMaker development and the easier it will be for us to collaborate on projects.
The conventions will evolve over time, so please check back later to see if we have made any updates.
If you are digging into DevCon2Go16 for the international FileMaker Developer Conference or any of the european conferences, these conventions was used to create this app.

FileMaker 15 product family was released today !

There are several great things to say about the new release.

One thing that is very interesting, is the changes made to FileMaker Server 15 and SSL certificates. We now have a better and easier way to install certificates, using the FileMaker Server Admin Console. Not only that, but now there is support for more certificate. Most interesting is the support for wildcard and SAN certificates and intermediate certificates.

Want to know more about what this is all about ?

Richard Carlton and Claus Lavendt has created a video that explains all about the new way to install certificates. We also talk about the principles of DNS and SSL. Watch the video, that Richard Carlton and his team has put together below.

Also take a look at their great site; learningfilemaker.com – where you can get great content and learn all about developing FileMaker.

You can ask questions and add comments below, where we will do our best to provide answers about this exciting area of FileMaker Server 15.

We are very proud to announce that FileMaker Inc. has appointed DataManix as a FBA Platinum partner.

Platinum partners are specially selected by FileMaker Inc., an Apple subsidiary, for exhibiting the highest level of technical expertise and customer service in creating innovative solutions on the FileMaker platform.

In order to celebrate this properly, we have created a desktop version of the FMS ServerAdmin tool, that we are giving away for free. Download the tool below.

What is FMS ServerAdminDT ?

This tool allows you to manage all your FileMaker Servers (version. 13+). You can access the FileMaker Server Admin console right from within the tool as well as manage SSL certificates for each server.

It is a perfect companion to our iOS app, that you can download from the Apple AppStore; FMS ServerAdmin. You can exchange server and SSL certificate informations between the desktop version and the iOS version of FMS ServerAdmin via csv file.

In order to give you even more tools, we have created an extra section in the desktop version, where you can store FileMaker installers and create custom installers with encoded license key and other options from AssistedInstall feature.

We have also included a feature, that can read the information in SSL certificate request and custom certificate files.

These features are made possibly using the great and free BaseElements plugin from our colleagues at Goya.

The FMS ServerAdminDT tool is free, but locked for development.

UPDATE: If you already downloaded this tool, you will notice that now you can also select to build FM15 installers.

Watch the movie to learn about the features.

FMS BackupHelper

FMS BackupHelper

In this video, we are talking about FileMaker Server backups – or more precisely, a backup set, that you create for remote backup.
Ultimately we want our FileMaker Server to take incremental backup, so we save on processing power and the time it takes to do a backup.
But we also want our remote backup software to do incremental backup, instead of moving a full copy every night.
Now in order for FileMaker server to do incremental backup, it needs to stamp the backup set folder with a timestamp. However, the Remote Backup software will as a result, see the entire folder and it’s files as changed and therefore it will do a full backup.

Watch this movie and download the FMS Backup Helper tool to solve this problem, so you can have both the FileMaker Server and your Remote Backup Software do incremental backups, which probably would also save you money on your remote storage backup.
